Aegean Sea
This oil painting is of a scene from a family holiday in Crete.
I had wanted to visit Crete for some time as my Great Uncle was killed during the second world war in the Battle of Crete. Being a stoker on the HMS Orion, his body was never recovered and he does not have a final resting place, so this was the closest that I could get to him, which is important as, being a military veteran, I have always honoured his life on Remembrance Sunday.
As I am writing in my memoirs, this holiday holds bitter-sweet memories because it took place shortly after my diagnosis with autism when I suffered from a mental health crisis.
I hope that I have managed to recreate the powerful atmosphere as I felt it through my depiction of the clouds and the different shades of blue.
The original painting has been sold to an art dealer who compared it to Turner, so somebody liked it and I hope that it found an appreciative home! Prints are often on show at events and still available to purchase.
